Joey Herring is a curator and public art administrator with more than 15 years of experience working with national and international artists and arts organizations to curate exhibitions and public art projects. He is Associate Director of Artistic Programs & Operations in the Chief Campus Curator’s Office at UC San Diego, where he provides strategic programming and operational leadership for The Strauss and Stuart Collection.
In his role, Joey translates curatorial vision into exhibitions, public art commissions, research initiatives, and public programs that advance the Chief Campus Curator’s Office’s priorities and UC San Diego’s cultural mission. Ahead of the launch of The Strauss in 2027, Joey is overseeing construction-phase activities, institution planning, and program development. He is focused on infrastructural, technical, and interior design specifications for core exhibition spaces and shaping the Gallery’s curatorial framework, including signature commissions, artist residencies, and cross-disciplinary collaborations.
Previously, Joey held public art roles for the City of Peoria, Arizona and San Diego International Airport, as well as curatorial positions at the Museum of Photographic Arts, Tate Modern, and The San Diego Museum of Art. He holds an M.A. in Curating the Art Museum from The Courtauld Institute of Art and a B.A. in Visual Arts–Art History, Criticism & Theory from UC San Diego.
